These are a few simple tips that will help you get into the habit of making your videos sound a little better. If you are working alone or with a crew of 1 to 100 making these three habits a part of your sound for video recording process will give you a head start on reducing the time it takes to edit and master the your videos’ audio.
Get 30 seconds with no one speaking recorded
This gives you something to insert where and when you cut out words. You can do this before or after you shoot the rest of your video, just make sure you do it in the same place with the same people and before you change the set up.
If it is very quiet you may not need an external microphone. No place except a recording studio or a sound stage is completely quiet so do the best you can with where you are.
Deciding what to shoot is usually easier once you know what the viewer will be listening to (hint: transcribe the talking head audio or go off of the script they used.)
Why this is important
I emphasize the value of having great audio on your videos because it makes it easier when repurposing the content as audio or in other types of video (like Scribble or slideshows) and even as text (by transcribing it.)
Following suggestions like these three will not only increase the quality of your videos, they will also make the editing (which is most time-consuming process of content creation) get done faster. When you have a good, clean audio track to work with everything else will be smoother and easier to deal with. There is no such thing as making bad audio good; you can make it better, however, it will never be good, unless you record it well.
It’s easy to do and it’s easy not to do
In video production, as in almost all other activities, achieving success is mostly a matter of doing simple little things over and over again until they become habits that you do without thinking. At first this can require a lot of reminding yourself and engaging in activities that are uncomfortable and do not feel natural. Persistence is what makes most of these become a part of your normal daily routine. The trick is to choose beneficial disciplines that will make a significant impact over time.
